Was there a hint of nepotism in Chip Kelly’s roster?

The Philadelphia Eagles did just what every other NFL team did today, trimmed their roster to the league maximum 53 players on the active roster. There was a great sense of anticipation over the past few weeks leading up to today as Eagles fans wanted to see what Chip Kelly would do with his first NFL roster.

The preseason games were played and so were the cuts. So how did the first year head coach do in assembling his roster?

If I could only use just one word to describe some of the moves made by the Eagles organization on Saturday, that word would be nepotism (to show favoritism). Kelly, who was free to make the decisions regarding the roster, kept former players from his time at Oregon who vastly underperformed compared to some who were released.

And due to that blatant favoritism, that once growing optimism that was building within me takes a step back. Is there a reason for concern here?

Two prime examples of this nepotism is the release of (LB) Chris McCoy who played with heart throughout the preseason. McCoy’s departure was done to pave the way for none other than Kelly’s former LB Casey Matthews.

But the list goes on.

Jeff Maehl over either Greg Salas or Russell Shepard? I mean really? Sure Maehl had a nice outing in the preseason finale recording seven receptions. But his performance was nowhere close to those by Salas or Shepard.

Is there anyone other than myself that would really enjoy hearing Chip Kelly’s explanation of some of the decisions made?

I sure hope not.

Can’t agree… McCoy vs Mathews? Mathews wins… one is ILB other OLB. Agreed that McCoy fought for the job… and had to be tough….

Now ” Jeff Maehl over either Greg Salas or Russell Shepard?” Shepard made way to many mistakes…. Did have highlights to….. Mistakes in preseason convert to loses in the regular season…. Salas I would have taken….. But it is not my team and I am not in the locker room or NovaCenter… To call his picks “nepotism” without actual proof is reaching for negative press… You did not mention cutting of dixon…. vs keeping Barkley. Didn’t Barkley go to the rival Oregon College?

In Closing….. He is coaching this team and it is his job to pick his Favorites!!! So “nepotism” is in the job description. Is he to pick our favorites? who is coaching…. This is what makes Philly so hard to play in. We pick apart everything that is done. Who on that list should be a starter on this team? Any…… NO! So fill the roster with players that give you the most when the injures start. That is what he did based on what info he had to work with.
Now I will say…. This is my opinion and you have yours. whos right? neither of us. Chip is cause he is the coach. I bleed GREEN (and Orange and Black) and I will root E A G L E S every gameday till I cant spell it correctly anymore.
